Electrolyte Balancing Smoothie
If you’re smoothie-d out and bored with blending the same ‘ol combination of frozen fruit and yogurt, check out this recipe! It’s fresh, great for summer, and has lots of bold flavors with an impressive nutrient profile. Wake up to this gingery floral smoothie or enjoy it as a post-workout snack. Bananas and dulse seaweed (seriously!) are both great ingredients for balancing electrolytes and staying hydrated this summer.
What is dulse? 
Dulse is a seaweed that grows wild in the northern Atlantic and Pacific coasts. Sea vegetables in general are really high in nutrients and antioxidants, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, protein and fiber. Dulse contains 56 minerals and important trace elements like iron and iodine that are hard to get elsewhere. The micronutrients and electrolytes in seaweed are bioavailable — or in the right form that human cells need to mesh with their metabolisms. Depending on it’s preparation, dulse can take on a savory flavor and even resemble bacon, but in this small amount blended into a smoothie, you won’t even taste it. You can find packaged dried pulse or dulse powder in well-stocked grocery stores like Whole Foods and natural food stores.
Serves 2

2 peeled and frozen bananas
2 handfuls of chopped or baby kale
1 inch of fresh ginger, chopped (skin is ok)
A few pieces of dulse seaweed (or 2-3 Tbs.)
3 pitted dates
2 T hemp seeds
2 T cacao nibs
2 T rosewater
2 cups vanilla unsweetened non-dairy milk of choice
Blend on high until smooth. Feel free to sprinkle with more hemp seeds. Serve immediately.
